A Simple Podcast Setup

One of the cool things about podcasting is how inexpensive it can be. If you are doing a solo show, it is possible to get a great sounding show with a small investment in a mic, and using your existing computer with a free audio editing program called Audacity. There are a myriad of examples of hardware, software and media hosting options, but I am going to give you a specific example of what a friend of mine has done. Jonathon has amazing quality in the sound, and it really has a professional feel to it. Click the player below to hear the quality of his very first episode.

Here is the basic setup:

Microphone: Audio Technica ATR 2100 Dynamic USB & XLR Microphone

Here are two identical but sometimes cheaper options:

Audio Technica AT2005 USB Microphone (I have 3 of these!)

Samson Q2U Microphone w/headphones included!

Audacity Software for audio editing. Free!

Acoustic Foam Panels for basic sound treatment of the recording space.

Neewer NW(B-3) 6 inch Studio Microphone Mic Round Shape Wind Pop Filter Mask Shield with Stand Clip (Black Filter)

Media Hosting involves where you store your files for distribution. Liberated Syndication (Libsyn) was the first podcast hosting service, and they are the company who served over 3 million files downloaded in one hour when the President Of The United States was on Marc Maron’s podcast. This is all you will ever need in hosting. They even give you a basic web site, and have various plans to choose from, starting at $5 a month.
